How to choose a pallet: dynamic, static and racking load
Updated: · Aurelia OÜ
Every pallet has three different load capacities, and they differ several times over. The EUR-size reference pallet carries an estimated 1500 kg on a forklift, 4000 kg on the floor and 1000 kg in a rack. Choose the pallet for the most demanding situation your goods go through.
Three loads
Dynamic load is what the pallet carries while moving: on a forklift, on forks, in a truck. The pallet bends between the forks and the load sways. This is usually the deciding value.
Static load is what the pallet carries standing still on a flat floor, even with other pallets on top. The floor supports the whole pallet, so this is the highest value.
Racking load is what the pallet carries in a rack, resting on just two beams. The whole pallet acts as a beam like a bridge, and the span is the pallet width. This is usually the lowest value.
How to choose
- Weigh the goods including their packaging.
- Think through the journey: will the goods be lifted, stacked or put in a rack?
- Compare the weight with the load capacity of each stage. The lowest is your limit.
- If the load is uneven (a machine with its weight concentrated in one point), leave a margin.
What increases load capacity
- Thicker top boards. Going from 22 mm to 25 mm raises bending strength by about 30%.
- More blocks. 12 blocks shorten the span of the boards.
- A perimeter base. Helps in racks and on conveyors.
- A shorter span. A smaller pallet carries more than a large one.
Enter the product weight in the configurator. If it exceeds a load capacity, the gauge turns red and the configurator suggests reinforcement that solves the problem.
Why it is an estimate
Wood is a natural material: knots, moisture and grain direction affect its strength. The configurator model takes into account the bending strength of the boards and the compressive strength of the blocks and is calibrated against known values. The final load capacity is confirmed in the quote.
